Therefore, while it may be the same old song and dance, there are clearly new steps in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. What this new content exactly entails and how much of a role it plays in the new game remains to be seen, but it’s understandable why more and more DBZ fans seem to be jumping on the bandwagon. Because of this, we’ve compiled a few ways for fans of the franchise to prepare for the upcoming action RPG, DBZ: Kakarot.

Play Dragon Ball Xenoverse
It’s not uncommon for gamers to play prior entries in a franchise prior to a game’s official release. For example, plays and streams of Borderlands, Borderlands 2, and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel were at an all-time high prior to the release of Borderlands 3. While Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot may not be a direct sequel to Xenoverse and Xenoverse 2, there are plenty of reasons to play it in preparation.
First and foremost, the combat shown for DBZ: Kakarot thus far suggests that it will be incredibly similar to the Xenoverse subfranchise. There will almost certainly be differences when the game officially launches, but that doesn’t stop Xenoverse from preparing a fan for Kakarot as much as possible. Plus, it’s just a good reason to play a DBZ game again, and it’s not like the core story from the beginning through the Buu Saga is changing anytime soon.
Secondly, it creates a great baseline for comparison. Many already look at Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and see the same old approach, but by playing Xenoverse beforehand and comparing the two, what makes Kakarot stand out will be more prominent. This may be a good reason for fans to justify their purchase of “yet another DBZ game” to see how it stacks up to recent predecessors. Playing other games like Dragon Ball FighterZ which is getting Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta isn’t off the table, but Xenoverse’s similarities make it the prime way to prepare.
Take a Break from Dragon Ball Super
Dragon Ball Z anime and manga fans have likely spent a ton of time with the franchise’s most recent iteration, Dragon Ball Super. From Goku’s rise to Super Saiyan God to the most recent story arcs, it’s been a fun story to follow. However, the chances of it appearing in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot slim down every day. That doesn’t necessarily outrule it as DLC, but the current and most likely scenario is that this focuses wholly on the Z saga.
Taking a break from Dragon Ball Super, then, to revisit Dragon Ball Z is not a bad way to prepare. Yes, it’s the same old story, but the changes being made Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot warrant another watch. Don’t skip out on the filler episodes either, considering filler content like Goku and Piccolo’s driver’s licenses episode has been confirmed to play some role in the story. In addition to that, re-watching the story will help separate forgotten-about filler content in DBZ: Kakarot and original content like the new character, Bonyu.

It seems Gamescom 2019 removed the stopgap on Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, as various tidbits of information have been flowing in ever since. The Buu Saga was confirmed not too long ago, pre-order bonuses and details on the Collector’s Edition followed, and new Kakarot gameplay of Vegeta in 3v1 combat was shown (among plenty of other things like his pink Badman shirt.)
The most recent was a small new look at Bonyu, an ex-member of the Ginyu Force, and a few shots of Gohan trying to live a normal life by attending school and flying around as Great Saiyaman. These really show both the dedication to quality new content and keeping Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot as rooted as possible.
For those who have been keeping up with every Kakarot screenshot and trailer released thus far, it’s clear that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is, at the very least, striving to be something bigger and different than DBZ games that have come before. Whether it sticks that landing remains to be seen, but many fans may want to be ready when it hopefully does.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is set to release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on January 17th, 2020.
