In this article, we’ll show you how to overlay pictures using Word’s built-in tools.
Choose the Right Settings
You can’t just drag your images on top of one another, as this will rearrange your entire document. To make it easier to position the images, you should set these options for each of them.
1. Wrap Text Option
Right-click the image and go to Wrap Text. Any option, besides In Line with Text, allows you to overlay images in a Word document. So go for Square, Tight, Behind Text, or another alternative that matches your document’s style.
Note: You can also choose a new Wrap text option from the Layout tab.
2. Enable the Allow Overlap Option
There is one more step before you’ll be able to drag pictures on top of another. Follow these steps to enable the Allow overlap option:
Select the image. Open the Layout tab. Click Position > More Layout Options. Check the Allow overlap option. Click OK to save the new settings.
Note: If Allow overlap is greyed out, the Wrap Text option is set to In line with Text and you should change it as shown above.
How to Arrange the Images
If you want to overlap three or more pictures, getting the wanted result might be a bit difficult. Instead of starting all over again every time you get the wrong image order, you could use these Microsoft Word tools to make your task easier.
Select the image you want to arrange and head to the Layout tab. There, open the Bring Forward and Send Backward menus. For example, select Bring Forward to move the image on top of another. If you want that image to be on top of all images, select Bring to Front.
To send one of the images in the back, use the Send Backward and Send to Back tools.
